How to Calculate Belt Conveyor Capacity

Menghitung Kapasitas Belt Conveyor - Patmanunggal Reka Abadi

Calculating Belt Conveyor Capacity – In the industrial world, particularly in the manufacturing, mining, and logistics sectors, belt conveyor systems are the primary solution for moving materials from one point to another. As an engineer, knowing the capacity of a belt conveyor is a crucial step in designing an efficient system.

Belt Conveyor Capacity

Belt conveyor capacity refers to how much material the system can move in a unit of time, usually expressed in cubic meters per hour (m³/h) or tons per hour (t/h). This information is useful for:

  • Selecting motor specifications and conveyor system dimensions
  • Set production speed
  • Avoid overload or loss of efficiency

General Calculation Formula

The basic formula for calculating belt conveyor capacity is:

Q=A×V×60

Information:

Q = Volumetric capacity (m³/hour)

A = Cross-sectional area of the material above the belt (m²)

V = Belt speed (m/sec)

The number 60 is used to convert seconds to minutes.

If you want to calculate in tons per hour, add the material density (ρ):

Qton=Q×ρ

ρ (rho) = Specific gravity of material (ton/m³)

Determining the Cross-Section Area of Material (A)

The cross-sectional area depends on the width of the belt and the shape of the material stacked on top. The value of A can be calculated using a simple approach:

A=k×

Information:

B = Belt width (m)

k = Cross-sectional shape factor, depending on idler angle and material type (range 0.015–0.03)

The following is a table of the k factor approach :

Material TypeIdler Anglek factor
Light/smooth material20°0.015
General materials30°0.020–0.025
Rough/heavy material45°0.025–0.030

Calculation Example

It is known:

Belt width (B) = 800 mm = 0.8 m

Belt speed (V) = 2 m/sec

Material density (ρ) = 1.5 tons/m³

Factor k = 0.02

Steps:

Calculate the cross-sectional area (A):

0.02 × 0.8 2 = 0.0128

Calculate the volumetric capacity (Q):

0.0128 × × 60 1.536 ³ / hour

Calculate the capacity in tons (Qₜ):

t = 1.536 × 1.5 2.304 hour

So, the belt conveyor is capable of moving around 2.3 tons of material per hour.

Calculating belt conveyor capacity is easy if you know key parameters such as belt width, belt speed, cross-sectional shape, and material density. These calculations help design a system that is efficient, safe, and meets the needs of the production process.
